Amazon River Cruises
The Mighty Amazon
Embark on a journey to one of the world’s vastly unexplored regions, the mighty Amazon. Experience the Amazon wilderness where it originates in Peru. The Amazon Basin covers an area larger than Western Europe, but it’s in Peru’s Amazon where biodiversity is at its greatest and the rainforest is untamed. The Amazon basin accounts for nearly 40% of the South America continent and spans across eight countries: Brazil, Suriname, French Guiana, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Peru. Over the past several million years, the Amazon has become the world’s most bio-diverse place and Peru’s Amazon offers visitors some of the most prolific wildlife viewing opportunities in its five million acres. The Amazon River, stretching over 4,000 miles, actually begins as a tiny stream in Peru up in the Andes Mountains near Arequipa. This stream merges with other streams as they descend from the mountains and become larger and larger finally forming the two main headwaters of the Amazon River in Peru. It is the Ucayali and the Maranon Rivers that join together near Iquitos, Peru to form the mighty Amazon. The river carries more water than any other in the world and is responsible for nearly 1/5 of all the fresh water that flows into our oceans. The surrounding rainforest and the river itself support over 3,000 species of fish, 40,000 plant species, 1,300 bird species, 1,500 species of amphibian and reptiles, and at least 500 mammals. That’s approximately 15% of the world’s total species found in one area covering 2.6 million square miles. Your cruise along Peru’s Amazon ventures deep into the Amazon jungle past the point of where deep water boats can go. You will come face to face with the elusive wildlife that is so abundant here as you cruise into the flooded forest with your expert Naturalists. Go fishing for Amazon fish including piranha, take a swim with the pink dolphins, explore the dense jungle on foot and visit native communities while on your Amazon cruise with Avalon Waterways. While the Amazon region covers almost 60% of Peru, there are many other areas beyond the Amazon to be discovered in Peru and Avalon Waterways includes the must see spots! Spend time in the Peru’s capital, Lima, the Sacred Valley, and, of course, Machu Picchu.
Your Own Personal Expert
Each day the Delfin III’s expert Naturalists provide rich narrative about life along the Amazon as you journey into little-visited areas like the remote Pacaya Samiria Reserve while interacting with the people who live out their days along the river. The Delfin III’s guides and crew have firsthand knowledge of Amazon River animals, plants and birds, as well as the history of this part of Peru. Each of the Naturalists onboard lead guests of the Delfin III on daily expeditions aboard comfortable skiffs deep into the Amazon’s tributaries and on foot into the sultry Amazon rainforest. True ribereños, or “river dwellers”, our English speaking Amazon experts grew up here on the banks of the Amazon, and know every bird and mammal call as well as they do the sound of their mother’s voice. They possess a local native’s ability to spot a brown-throated three-toed sloth sleeping high up in the tree canopy, an anaconda slithering along the shoreline and even the elusive capybara hiding in the high grass after nightfall. Beyond the Amazon, your experienced Tour Director introduces you to Peru and one of the wonders of the world…Machu Picchu! Not only will you spend two days exploring this ancient citadel you will also discover Peru’s colorful costumes, traditional Andean customs, and Inca hospitality in the Sacred Valley, Cusco, and Lima.
