Burt Wolf, the host of the public television series Travels & Traditions, will be on-board this Avalon Waterways' Danube River Cruise and he would like you to join him. Burt and his television crew will produce a special edition of his program which makes this a unique opportunity for a limited number of people to travel with Burt and see how his television programs are produced.

Burt Wolf Cruise Highlights
  • Prior to cruise commencement, Burt will mail dvd copies of his programs to each guest: "Christmas in Vienna", "Monasteries of Austria" and "The History of Coffee".
  • During the 8-day cruise, guests will have the unique opportunity to interact and watch Burt and his crew film material for a special television program about the Cruise.
  • Onboard, Burt will present an overview of the cruise and filming plan. In addition, he will give a series of talks about the importance of the locations he will be filming.
  • A series of special BURT WOLF events during the cruise:
    • Tasting Class on the Wines of the Region
    • Tasting of the Special Foods of Austria
    • Tasting and Presentation on Austrian Coffee Culture
  • At completion of cruise, guests will receive a special gift from Burt.
  • After the completion of the cruise, guests will be mailed a dvd copy of the Travels & Traditions program produced about the cruise.
Cruise Overview
This seven-night cruise begins and ends in Budapest. Fly into Hungary's capital and transfer by motorcoach to Esztergom, where your river cruise vessel awaits you. Cruise upriver as far as Passau, enjoying city sightseeing in Bratislava. Visit Melk's spectacular Benedictine Abbey and the charming resort town of Grein along the way. Returning downriver, stop in Dürnstein for a walking tour before reaching Vienna. Guided sightseeing shows you the city's highlights. End your vacation in Budapest with sightseeing of Buda and Pest, located on either side of the Danube.

Cruise Details & Additional Information
Cruise Itinerary
Day 1  (Sat.) Board your overnight flight.

Day 2  Arrive in Budapest, Hungary. Transfer to Esztergom. (Embarkation) (Sun.) If you are booking your own flight to Budapest it must arrive before 2:30 pm, at which time an Avalon motor coach will bring you to Esztergom, one of Hungary's most historical cities. Esztergom is the boarding point for the cruise. (D)

Day 3  Bratislava, Slovakia. (Mon.) Situated at the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains, Bratislava is the capital of Slovakia. The sites include the Old Town, the Mirbach Palace, as well as, the Gothic cathedral of St.Martin.(FB,L,D)

Day 4  Melk, Austria-Grein. (Tue.) Melk's Benedictine Abbey is one of the most magnificent structures in Europe and was the location for one of Burt's television programs. There will be a guided tour of the Abbey and a visit to the nearby town of Grein. (FB,L,D)
Day 5  Passau, Germany-Linz, Austria. (Wed.) Located at the confluence of the rivers Ilz and the Danube, Passau is a city arcades and cobblestone streets. It's Cathedral of St. Stephens houses the world's largest church organ with over 17,000 pipes. There is also an optional full day excursion to the city of Salzburg. (FB,L,D)
Day 6  Dürnstein-Vienna. (Thu.) Dürnstein is known for its unusual baroque blue colored church and it's location at the center of the Wachau wine region. Above the town are the ruins of a 12th century castle where Richard the Lionhearted, King of England, was held for two years while his family decided if they wanted to pay the ransom. Then on to Vienna. (FB,L,D)

Day 7  Vienna. (Fri.). For hundreds of years the center of the Habsburg Empire, Vienna is filled with magnificent art, architecture, great music and excellent shopping. It is also the world epicenter for pastry and great coffee. (FL,L,D)

Day 8  Budapest, Hungary. (Sat.) Budapest is one of the liveliest and most cosmopolitan cities in Eastern Europe. There will be a guided tour of the ancient Fishermen's Bastion and the Matthias Church. (FB,L,D)

Day 9  Budapest. (Disembarkation) (Sun.) Your homebound flight arrives the same day. (FB)

Meals

Full breakfasts, lunches and dinners (FB,L,D) are served on board. There is also a cocktail reception, welcome dinner and Captain's dinner. Quality wines from Europe's most famous wine regions are served with every dinner.

Early Riser Coffee: 6:00am, Self-service coffee, hot water, tea bags, croissants, cookies or other finger foods.

Breakfast: 7:00am - 8:30am, A buffet table includes a wide variety of breads, cereals, fruit and fruit salad, cold cuts, smoked salmon, cheeses, pastries, yogurts, juices. Scrambled eggs, sausages, bacon, and other hot items can vary from day to day. The chef will prepare fresh omelets and other egg dishes to order.

Lunch: Usually served at 12:30pm depending on the cruise schedule, Buffet-style with appetizers, soups, sandwiches, cold cuts, breads, salad bar, two main courses (one of which may be a carving station), dessert table, cheese board, and fresh fruit.

Afternoon Tea: Coffee, tea and cake will be served either in the lounge or on the Sun or Sky Deck.

Dinner: Usually served at 7:30pm depending on cruise schedule. Dinner is usually four courses with choices including vegetarian. Choice of entrees with every dinner to include complimentary red and white wines from the region.

Since 1982, Burt Wolf has written and produced over 4,000 segments for Cable News Network (CNN), 800 segments for ABC (the American Broadcasting Company), 125 half-hour programs for the travel division of The Discovery Channel, 26 half hours for the Family Channel and 250 half hours for Public Broadcasting. He has been nominated for two CableAce Awards and a national Emmy in connection with cultural history.
